Your brakes are one of, if not the most critical systems on your entire vehicle. But despite this many people do not actually know how they work. Your brakes are actually powered by a fluid.

Your brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that is kept in a reservoir under the hood of your car, truck, or SUV. It is different from the oils in your vehicle so it is a good idea to know what it looks like so you can monitor for leaks.

When you step on your brake pedal, the master cylinder forces your brake fluid through your brake system via the rubber hoses that connect to your calipers. This transfer of force from the brake fluid causes the calipers to compress and your pads to make contact with the rotors causing the vehicle to slow to a stop.

If you have any other questions about your brake fluid or need it checked then come and see our service experts here at Ford Lincoln of Columbia.
